When I read 1984 by George Orwell

Synopsis:
In George Orwell’s 1984, Winston Smith wrestles with oppression in Oceania, a place where the Party scrutinizes human actions with ever-watchful Big Brother. Defying a ban on individuality, Winston dares to express his thoughts in a diary and pursues a relationship with Julia. These criminal deeds bring Winston into the eye of the opposition, who then must reform the nonconformist. George Orwell’s 1984 introduced the watchwords for life without freedom: BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.
The story revolves around the totalitarian regime in a dystopian world named “Oceania” where people are always under the surveillance of telescreens and even the slighest movement or a twitch of your eyes can make you a criminal and a suspect of the thought police, ending you in a torture chamber basically.

My thoughts:
I had this classic novel on my tbr for a while before I finally picked it up since I was just free that day and it surprised me so much. It was a fascinating look into dystopia and questions what happens if we give total control to the government. The world-building of dystopia, the scenes and the characterisation was all really amazing. It’s a classic for a reason.
An unforgettable story about the inner strength and inherent weakness of the human spirit, struggling in the most oppressive of worlds. A book that teaches us to love and value freedom, and its costs; to cherish independent thoughts, and never letting go the fight for the cause. It also made me feel so much for our main characters, especially for Winston and Julia, the budding relationship. This was dark, raw and grim which brought with it an unmissable experience reading it.
Few of my favourite quotes from the book will be:
Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.
Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four.
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
Lastly, the novel 1984 really makes you think about the themes of the book, about power and control, about manipulation and language, depicting the extreme version of a world where the government can vanish people like they never existed after they commit a thought crime or do anything against what the party preaches about and the world continues. No one forgets it, just ignores it since they fear they can be next. Honestly an awesome book!
My ratings:
